Maccy Duplicate Items: Why They Appear and How to Stop Them

Quick answer: Maccy normally merges identical copies into one history entry and moves it to the top. When you still see duplicates, the clipboard contents were not byte-identical. The usual causes are the same text copied with and without formatting, another app rewriting the clipboard right after you copy, Universal Clipboard echoes from another Apple device, or a sort order that makes repeats look like separate items. Each cause has a fix.
This guide covers how Maccy App decides two items are “the same,” the five most common reasons it decides they are not, and how to fix each. The settings paths below match recent Maccy Mac versions. Menu labels shift slightly between releases, so check yours.
Maccy Clipboard checks each new clipboard entry against existing history. If it finds an identical item, it does not add a second row. It moves the existing entry to the top and increments that item’s copy count. A real duplicate should therefore never appear as two separate rows.
The key word is identical. A clipboard entry is not just a string. macOS lets an app place several representations of the same copy on the pasteboard at once: plain text, RTF, HTML, and sometimes private metadata types. Maccy compares what was stored, not only what you see. Two copies that look the same on screen can differ underneath.
| Cause | What you see | Quick fix |
|---|---|---|
| Rich text vs. plain text | Two near-identical rows, one copied from a web page or document, one pasted as plain text | Stop saving rich types, or stick to one copy method |
| A clipboard-modifying app | A formatted entry followed by a stripped one, within a second | Check that app’s clipboard-manager compatibility setting |
| Universal Clipboard | Items appear that you never copied on this Mac | Ignore the com.apple.is-remote-clipboard pasteboard type |
| Sort order | Repeats seem scattered or reordered | Change the sort setting |
| Near-identical text | Trailing space, newline, or different line endings | Not a bug. The items differ |
This is the most frequent cause. Copy a sentence from a web page and the pasteboard carries styled text. Copy the same sentence from a plain-text editor and it carries only plain text. To you it is one sentence. To Maccy it is two distinct clipboard payloads, so you get two rows.
You will notice it most when you work across browsers, Notes, Pages, and code editors, where the same snippet passes through apps with different formatting behavior.
What to do:
Utilities that strip formatting, expand snippets, or clean URLs work by changing the clipboard right after a copy. If Maccy reads the clipboard before the utility finishes, it stores the original. A moment later it sees the modified version and stores that too. The result is a pair that differs only by formatting.
This has been discussed in the Maccy issue tracker in connection with a plain-text-conversion app. The app’s developer reportedly made it clipboard-manager friendly, but a small chance of rich and plain duplicates remained. A proposed fix was for Maccy to detect such a rewrite and replace the original entry.
How to diagnose it: quit the other clipboard utility, copy the same text twice, and see whether the duplicates stop. If they do, you have found the conflict. Then look for a compatibility option in that utility, or add the app to Maccy’s ignore list if it makes sense. You can use a pasteboard inspector such as Pasteboard Viewer to see exactly which types each copy carries.
With Handoff on, anything you copy on an iPhone, iPad, or another Mac signed into the same Apple ID can land on this Mac’s clipboard. Maccy sees it as a normal copy. If you copied the same text on both devices, you may see both versions.
This is Apple’s Universal Clipboard behavior, not a Maccy defect. Maccy’s maintainer has pointed to a specific fix: add com.apple.is-remote-clipboard to the pasteboard types Maccy ignores.
Steps:
com.apple.is-remote-clipboard.Alternatively, turn off Handoff in System Settings if you do not use Universal Clipboard at all.
Maccy offers several sort modes, including last copy time, first copy time, and number of copies. If you sort by first copy time, an item you just re-copied stays at its original position instead of jumping to the top. It looks as if the copy did nothing, or as if an old entry is lingering.
If you expect “copy it again and it moves to the top,” use last copy time.
A trailing space, an extra newline, or different line endings (Windows \r\n versus Unix \n) are enough to make two strings distinct. You often pick these up when copying from terminals, PDFs, and chat apps, which add or trim whitespace on their own. Maccy is doing the right thing here. The fix is on the source side, or you can accept the extra row.
Maccy does not, as far as I know, have a one-click “remove duplicates” command. Your options:
A bulk “paste or delete multiple items” feature has been requested in the project’s issue tracker for years, so selective bulk cleanup remains limited.
Before you change settings, rule out these look-alikes.
~/Library/Containers/org.p0deje.Maccy/Data/Library/Application Support/Maccy. If a cloud service syncs that folder, you can get odd merged or doubled history.com.apple.is-remote-clipboard.Strict deduplication would be easy if Maccy only compared visible text. It would also throw away real information: the formatted and plain versions of a copy are legitimately different when you paste into a rich editor. Keeping them separate preserves what you copied, at the cost of the occasional visual repeat. For a local-first tool that does not guess what you meant, that is a defensible default. If it bothers you, narrow what Maccy stores and ignore the sources that create noise.
Which of the five causes did you find in your setup? If it was something not listed here, it is worth reporting in the project’s issue tracker with the pasteboard types attached.
